The Corolla is a line of subcompact/compact cars first manufactured and introduced by Toyota in 1966. It has since become the best selling nameplate in the world, with over 35 million units sold as of 2007. On average, one Toyota car is being sold every 40 seconds.

The first generation Toyota Corolla (E10) was introduced in October 1966. Its successor, the E20 (also the second generation Corolla), was introduced four years later (1970) and was restyled with a more rounded body. The third generation Corollas began with the E30 models which was introduced in 1974. The E30 was later replaced with the E50 models (which is still regarded as third generation).

1979 saw a major restyle of the Corolla and ushered in the fourth generation of the car, the E70. The Corollas of this time had a simpler treatment of the grill, head lights and tail lights. These were manufactured by Toyota until 1983, the year they began production for a Corolla model with a sloping front bonnet and a contemporary sharp-edged, no-frills style. That was the E80, regarded as the fifth generation of the car.

Toyota introduced a new generation of the vehicle every 4 years (on average)--the E80 was replaced by the E90 (sixth generation) in 1987; the E100 (seventh generation) was introduced in June 1991; the eighth generation E110 followed in 1995; the ninth generation E120 and E130 came out in 2000, and the tenth generation (current)--the E140 and the E150--was launched in 2006.

Based on their analysis of 28 published reviews and test drives of the Toyota Corolla, U.S. News (Rankings and Reviews) rates the 2010 Toyota Corolla 19th out of 30 affordable small cars.

The 2010 Corolla is a front-wheel drive sedan available in five trims: the base trim, LE, XLE, S, and XRS. Redesigned for the 2009 model year, it added a 2.4-liter engine option and standard anti-lock brakes. The Corolla carries over virtually unchanged this year, but adds standard stability control for all trims. Be sure to check for current Toyota deals that may be available on a new Corolla.

The Wall Street Journal describes the Corolla as "a nifty way to get around." And Motor Trend refers to it as "the perfect carpool-commuter and ideal for small families wiling to ride in an efficient alternative to SUVs, minivans, and the Prius."
